Ecuador is a truly fantastic country; with four incredibly diverse regions, the Andean sierra, the Pacific coast, the Amazon basin and the enchanted Galapagos Islands, it's no wonder that it is such a popular travel destination, making tourism the country's third largest industry.
By offsetting your flights with CanopyCo, native trees will be planted to absorb the carbon dioxide emissions produced, and a contribution from your purchase will go towards our community development fund.
To offset your flight's carbon emissions we suggest the following guidelines for the number of trees to be purchased.
Please note:
To make your flight carbon neutral, use the figures in WHITE
To include radiative forcing
Radiative Forcing is a measure of total climate impact. The total climate impact of flights includes the effects of carbon dioxide, water vapour (contrails), nitrous compounds and ozone affecting pollutants at high altitudes. The IPCC (International Panel on Climate Control) are still investigating this complex effect, but estimates suggest a radiative forcing index (RFI) of between 2 and 4 (this is a direct index relating the atmospheric impact of other pollutants to carbon dioxide emissions). for your flight, you must use the figures in YELLOW.

Trees are valued at $10, which includes the planting and continued maintenance of the native forests, as well as a contribution to our rural community development fund.
As you will appreciate, we can only plant whole trees.

Table assumptions and notes
*Please note the CO2 emission data used on this page was taken from the UK Governments' DEFRA Passenger Transport Emission Factors report from June 2007.
*There is an uplift factor of 1.09 applied to take into account non direct routes and circling.
*A Radiative Forcing Index (RFI) of 3 has been used which allows for the total climate impact of the flight, not just CO2 emissions. The Radiative Forcing Index is estimated between 2 and 4, which we have averaged to 3. This is still under study by the IPCC and the real impact is currently unknown.
*Please note that the carbon dioxide sequestration data was assumed from various published sources. Study is underway to establish exactly the CO2 absorption rates for the native tree species being planted in their ecosystems.
*CanopyCo will plant and maintain the trees plus 25% to cover natural losses and errors in calculations.
*A percentage of the fee for planting trees will be used for community development work such as alternative energies, environmental education and the protection of water sources.
- Disclaimer
The carbon emissions and offsetting data have been calculated using various information sources. Carbon emission and offsetting calculations are not an exact science and involve many complex variables. CanopyCo to the best of its knowledge has provided accurate information and explanations, and is currently investigating the carbon sequestration properties of native trees in various ecosystems in Ecuador.
