CanopyCo - Environmental education initiatives

A focus for our development activities is an environmental education programme designed to bring teenagers from urban and rural schools into close contact with nature. Through fieldtrips and talks they learn about different ecosystems with emphasis on the conservation of natural resources and the importance of biodiversity for our environment; they will look at, and analyse life cycles, in particular the complex role of native forests and their relationship with climate and water sources.

Environmental education programs in EcuadorOur efforts will focus on 2 reforestation days per school per grade per year. This way, each person participating in the program from the age of 14 will be involved in 8 reforestation days; 8 important days for practical environmental education to compliment their classroom activities. The fruits of their labours will be clear when we revisit sites after a year or two, and help their understanding as to the affect of their work.

Each school group will be received at a centrally located tree nursery where they will be shown the route "from seed to sapling", before we head to the reforestation area.

On each outing we will plant a variety of native species commonly found within that area, with a view to regaining a once present diversity, itself an enormous benefit for other local flora and fauna.

By buying trees from CanopyCo you will help pay for this important educational exercise and its climatic benefits.
