CanopyCo and community development in Ecuador

In addition to covering reforestation costs the sale of trees will contribute to our community development fund, as part of a complete programme working towards a more comfortable and healthier environment for the residents of rural communities in Ecuador.

Projects for funding are:

Forest conservation; the felling of forests is the primary contributor of carbon dioxide into our atmosphere. So, as well as our reforestation activities, we are providing funding for the protection of native forests that are under threat from the advance of agriculture.

Biogas units for cooking using methane from animal manure. These systems capture methane from decomposing animal manure that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. Methane is 24 times more potent a greenhouse gas than CO2.

So, by capturing this gas, it doesn't escape to such a great extent into the atmosphere, and can subsequently be used for cooking or heating water; providing savings for the family and the environment; the system replaces buying tanked or gathering firewood and burning it. An additional advantage is a hygienic environment for those hard working pigs!

Environmental Education programmes with communities and school children with a clear message; we must all live in harmony with nature. Programmes will involve suitably detailed talks on climate change, its causes and impacts and how we can help reduce them. Following which we will discuss the life cycle and role of trees in the environment and plant native tree species in a designated conservation area.

We are sponsoring environmental research to further understanding of the unique ecosystems present in Ecuador, and to obtain data to help with forestry management decisions.

Recycled plastic tubing for solar water heating. This is a simple way of providing hot water in high altitude communities. The sun heats the water within the tubing coiled on the house roof, which in turn provides sufficient hot water for a shower, bringing comfort and health benefits. As little as 30 minutes are needed to heat the water.

Community tree nurseries in EcuadorSetting up community tree nurseries and training locals to manage them. The nurseries will be providing us with the native trees for reforesting and in return we will be providing the community with paid employment.

Agro forestry and sustainable organic agriculture practices for healthier living that will reduce the threat of agriculture on sensitive eco systems like the forests or paramo.
